and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies, whomsoever.

The History behind Thomas F. Healy
The mysterious explosion and sinking of the USS Maine off the coast of Cuba in 1898 caused Thomas F. Healy to join the US Army and the United States to enter the War with Spain.

Tom enlisted with Company M, 13th US Infantry January 1899 in Rochester, NY. He sailed from San Fransico April 1899 bound for the Philippines and arrived in Manilla in May of 1899.

On the 10th of June 1899, Tom died in his first battle south of Manila around the coastal towns of Paranaque and Las Pinas.

Thomas F. Healy was only 17 years old when he fell in his first battle becoming the first resident from the city of Rochester to die in combat on foreign soil.
